CoRE to Career: Lee-an’s Inspiring Journey

When Lee-an Lu became a part of the CoRE Program at Kent Street Senior High, she had no inkling of its significant impact on her future. Now, she is a professional geologist at Gold Fields, actively making valuable contributions to the resources industry, showcasing the transformative power of the CoRE experience.

Building Foundations in CoRE

Lee-an’s adventure with CoRE began in Year 10 back in 2013 when she embraced the thrilling task of creating the CoRE logo. What started as a simple design project quickly evolved into a pathway filled with practical learning and leadership experiences that shaped her high school journey.

As part of CoRE, Lee-an was able to lead teams, showcase her work at industry events, and carry out her own scientific research. These opportunities not only enhanced her understanding of STEM but also equipped her with the confidence and abilities to thrive in demanding situations.

"CoRE pushed the limitations of what I thought I could do, every single day. Before CoRE, I never imagined I’d be leading teams, public speaking, or running my own experiments. The program allowed me to take charge of my learning and pursue what interested me," she reflects.

From CoRE to Career

After undertaking various vacation work experiences throughout university and helping start Curtin University’s Women in Mining and Resources club (WIMAR), Lee-an started as a Graduate Geologist with Goldfields Australia (GFA), spending six months at every GFA site.

Fast forward to today, Lee-an is now in her dream job as a geologist within the Agnew Exploration team exploring for their next near-mine discovery.

She credits CoRE’s emphasis on real-world insights and hands-on learning as the foundation of her career. The program provided her with a unique opportunity to connect classroom knowledge with industry applications, preparing her for a seamless transition into the professional world.

"I’m thankful for CoRE and Suzy’s mentorship for helping me discover a passion for what I do and preparing me for life outside the classroom."

The Impact of STEM Learning

Lee-an’s experience highlights the importance of initiatives like CoRE that transcend conventional education. CoRE provides students with essential tools to address intricate challenges in STEM and other areas by promoting critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

For Lee-an, CoRE represented more than just a learning program; it served as a springboard for her professional journey. Her story exemplifies the potential that arises when students are encouraged to take ownership of their education and chase their interests.

CoRE continues to motivate and equip students for life after school, creating pathways to careers in STEM disciplines. Through activities like scientific research, collaboration with industry experts, and spearheading innovative projects, CoRE paves the way for opportunities that students might have never thought possible.
